Lets taco bout Bakersfield, Johnny Cash and the weather for today!

Good Morning Nashville. Let's continue our journey through Nash's Guide to Nashville.

Here’s what we got for you today:

  1. All about the Johnny Cash Museum.

  2. What's the weather going to be like today?

  3. How Bakersfield is one of the best places to get tacos and drinks.

Don’t Walk the Line, Walk Inside

Just around the corner (literally) from the boom of Broadway, the Johnny Cash Museum is a must-see stop for all country music enthusiasts.

On 3rd Avenue South, just across from the Moxy Nashville Downtown hotel, this museum features the biggest and best collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the entire world.

Cash was one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, and visiting the museum is a chance to see behind his career and personal life, including his marriage to June Carter Cash and his time in the Air Force.

The original Cash Museum was located in the artist’s former home in Hendersonville, Tennessee, but it’s been in its current spot downtown since 2013.

Once inside, you’ll walk through artifacts of Cash’s life (from his humble start on his family’s cotton farm to his fame as a multi-award-winning musical artist) as you see personal letters, his old Martin, and even his San Quentin prison jumpsuit costume (to name one of the historic fashion pieces on display).

There’s a special Progression of Sound exhibit that shows Cash’s journey through various genres (remember that iconic cover of Nine Inch Nails’s “Hurt” for goodness sake?) and shines a light on the change in musical technology with a display of Cash’s records through the years on LPs, CDs, and even 8-track tapes. (If you don’t know what that last one is, it goes way back, just like Cash’s career!) And small theaters throughout show clips of Johnny’s performances with various other artists and his appearances on popular TV programs, like Hee Haw, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and The Simpsons.

Visit the gift shop so you can take home a memory like Cash-covered clothing, houseware, stickers, CDs, songbooks, harmonicas, and even some Johnny Cash swag for your pet. And if you’re hungry after, Johnny Cash’s BBQ and Bar is right next door, serving up great food, drinks, and live music. Or, again, you’re literally steps away from tons of food options on and around Broadway.

Weather for today:

It is going to warm up a bit later in the day. Get ready for some rain and possible thunderstorms as well.

Let’s Taco ‘Bout Bakersfield

I love food. I love Music City. And one of my favorite foods to get in Music City? Tacos. Today I’ve just got to tell you about one of my top taco spots in Nashville: Bakersfield.

Now, if you’re much of a traveler, or you live in a city where there’s also a Bakersfield, you know this isn’t a Nashville-only spot. But, our location is still incredible and still worth your time. And the main reason why all comes down to the delicious menu.

Start your night right with chips and dip. They’ve got guac, salsa, queso, and even a Short Rib Queso. Or, if you’re like me, you’ll order the Trio with the guac and two kinds of salsa.

If you’re hitting those New Year’s goals and wanting a healthier option, look no further than their three salad offerings, appropriately named the Loretta (arugula, spiced pepita, tomato, radish, queso, and a chipotle honey vinaigrette), the Johnny (mixed greens, bacon, hearts of palm, avocado, red onion, toasted almond, and a cider vinaigrette), and the Willie (with a true taco salad vibe including roasted chicken, crispy tortillas, and a buttermilk dressing).

They’ve got tortas, taquitos, and multiple awesome taco options. The best part? You don’t have to limit yourself to one. The tacos are each sold separately, so go ahead and sample out two, three, or seven. I’ll never judge.

I mean, look at these flavor combos. Pollo Verde comes with tomatillo braised chicken, crema, pickled white onion, queso fresco, and cilantro. Hongos will please the vegatarans with portobello, poblano, bell pepper, buttermilk kale slaw, and cotija cheese. (Have I told you how much I love specially-crafted slaw on a taco? Well, now you know.)

The Short Rib taco has braised short rib (of course), queso fresco, crema, white onion, radish, and cilantro. Plus, you’ve got shrimp options, fish options, two other vegetarian versions (one with corn truffle and one with potatoes), beer braised pork options, and more. Add a sharable side like black beans, corn salad, or roasted cauliflower, and you’re looking at a perfect tex-mex evening.

Oh, maybe add in a Pineapple Margarita, the Bakersfield Sour, or a Pomegranate Paloma. Then you’re officially set.

All this talking about tacos, sides, and cocktails has me ready to head out to Bakersfield right now. Maybe I’ll see you there?
