Three Small Businesses that are worth supporting

One of my favorite things about Music City? The small businesses! People who’ve been here their whole lives, maybe taking over the biz from family. People who move here to start their dreams. It doesn’t matter how the small business gets going, I just love to watch them thrive. And today I want to share three particular ones in Nashville you should know about.

Thistle Farms

I seriously love this place. And it all comes down to their mission. Their website explains, “For 25 years, Thistle Farms has lit a pathway of healing and hope for women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction.”

Thistle Farms does just that in a couple ways. First, you can buy products to support the cause (some of which are made all over the globe by those survivors). They offer home decor, apparel, jewelry, candles, essential oil items (Their laundry refreshing spray is legit!), and more.

Second, you can visit the cafe on Charlotte Pike and enjoy their super intentional tea service. Either way, you’ll know you’re doing some good—and getting something great out of it at the same time.

Cosmic Connections

Around since 2002, Cosmic Connections offers what their website describes as “a large array of metaphysical tools along with readings, energywork, classes, and events.” Right now their events are online (check out the calender here), but they’ll be starting up in-person gatherings again soon.

You can shop in-store or online for jewelry, incense and burners, smudging tools, crystals, singing bowls, mala beads, candles, and more items to get re-centered and become more focused.

Cupcake Collection

Founder and CEO of The Cupcake Collection Mignon Francois started her business with one spoon and a lot of grit. And these days, she’s making cupcakes in Nashville you’ll have dreams about for years to come. Years.

Perfect for any party—or a random day of the week when you want to treat yourself or someone you love—the Cupcake Collection offers a range of flavors sure to delight any baked good enthusiast.

There’s the Classic Yellow, Sweet Lemonade, Carrot Cake, and Strawberry—to name a few. But, listen. You’ve got to buy at least one of the Sweet Potato Cupcakes. Trust me.

I was able to meet her through the Entrepreneur Center's Inflight program. She was such a beautiful person and loves to help people also live their passion.

There are so many more great small businesses in Nashville. So first off, what’s your favorite, and why? Second, if you’ve already been to one of these spots, what did you think? Send me your thoughts! I’d love to hear.

Weather for today:

Going to be a pretty cloudy day with mild winds and a chill in the air.

The Pasta-bilities Are Endless at Rolf and Daughters

Sometimes I think pasta is the 6th love language. When it’s done well—it’ll sweep you right off your feet. And if you eat at Nashville’s exquisite Rolf and Daughters on Taylor Street, well, prepare to be wooed by the food.

Situated in the historic Werthan factory of the Germantown neighborhood, Rolf and Daughters has a high-end-meets-comfort vibe. Exposed wood and brick, high ceilings, and elegance (but nothing hoity toity) will greet you as you walk in. And you’ll be welcomed by the smell of fresh-baked sourdough bread.

Since I started the topic of food, let’s explore this menu. Start off with Lamb Sausage, Beef Tartare, or the aforementioned Sourdough Bread. Then prepare yourself for what’s next. There’s Agnolotti (a stuffed pasta) with sweet potato, pecan, sage, and brown butter; Spaghetti with blue crab, calabrian chili, and breadcrumb; and Tagliatelle (similar to the fettuccine noodle) with lamb, horseradish, and pecorino.

If you don’t go the pasta route, you can enjoy the Triggerfish with Meyer lemon and fennel, the Pastured Chicken with preserved lemon and garlic confit, or the Heritage Pork with sprouted rye, black currant, and turnip.

For dessert, there’s the Vanilla Ice Cream Bar with cinnamon chili chocolate, Satsuma Sorbet with a milk granita, Sunchoke Ice Cream with honey and buckwheat, and a Granny Smith Apple Galette with Mimolette on the side. I have a friend who insists on having cheese with his apple pie. This classic Italian dessert shows how common the combo is in Europe! If you’re going to try this flavor duo—Rolf and Daughters is the place to do it.

I haven’t even mentioned the drink selection yet. Their beverage menu is 16 pages long. I’m. Not. Kidding. Wines for days, tea and coffee options, beer, rum, brandies, and so many whiskeys.

And the cocktails leave nothing to be desired as well. The Sweet Chin Music is Ford's Gin, Mount Rigi, grapefruit, lemon, ginger, and absinthe. The Sharpshooter is Old Forester, Faccia Brutto Aperitivo, Noveis Amaro, and lemon. And that’s just two of the many.

The food. The drinks. The vibe. You’ve got to get yourself a reservation and get to Rolf and Daughters. Your mouth will thank you.
