Rad Views and Walking Paths at Radnor Lake

Take a Hike (or a Walk)

I know I usually share the best places to party and partake of awesome food in Nashville, but did you know I love the outdoors just as much?

One of my favorite outdoor places in my favorite city is: Radnor Lake State Park.

The park opens at 6 a.m. and closes 20 minutes after the sun goes down, all year long. That’s right, you just got a tip for one of the best spots to watch a Nashville area sunset! Just don’t linger. Get out by closing time!

Radnor Lake is 1,368 acres of inspiring, natural beauty, just outside of the hustle and bustle of Music City. The nearly 8 miles of trails are perfect for hiking, photography, and wildlife watching. You might catch sight of owls, minks, herons, water fowl, amphibians, and even otters. If you want to bike, bring your pup, or jog, all that’s allowed on the Otter Creek Road trail.

There’s a visitor center and gift shop open Thursday through Monday if you’d like to learn more about the place or get some sweet state park swag. They’ve got educational events and activities planned throughout the year if you want to check that out. (I’ve seen charity runs take place at the park and heard the ranger-led canoe float and astronomy hike at night is great fun.)

But really, the best part of the park is your opportunity to get away from everything else—all the noise and go-go-go of regular life—and just be. So if that’s what you need, lace up your walking shoes, fill up your eco-friendly water bottle, (put on a jacket if you go in the chilly months), and get down to Radnor Lake State Park.

Weather for today:

Some snow showers and a bit of wind, but snow sure does make a pretty scene. Another beautiful day Nashville!

My Favorite Nashville Restaurant for Date Night.

A hike is fun solo or on a date. My girsfriend love the outdoors almost as much as I do:) We love to bring our pup with us to hike but we don't bring her on date nights. One of our favorite date night restaurants is 5th and Taylor. Here are the deets on 5th and Taylor.

My fav dish here so far? Smoked then fried chicken. Yeah, you heard me;)

    5th & Fantastic

Back in 2013, Chef Daniel Lindley began designing his dream for a restaurant in a historic Germantown warehouse space that would pay homage to the American family meal with a refined twist. His dream became Nashville’s impeccable 5th & Taylor on 5th Avenue North.

One of my favorite parts of this dining experience (and it really is an experience) is the vibe of the space itself. You won’t be able to miss the life-sized sculpture of General Francis Nash, Nashville’s namesake. The space really does meet Chef Lindley’s hope to create an ambiance of community and class. During the winter and fall time they have a heated patio and it is perfectly toasty.

And then there’s the food. The website explains, “Inspired by Sunday dinners from his childhood, the menu features familiar yet refined expressions of traditional fare meant to foster a sense of community among guests.” It does just that.

Seriously, if you were raised in the South, you’ll see Lindley’s nods to a home-cooked meal. And if you weren’t, this is one heck of a way to experience that culinary history! With appetizers like Hot Chicken Skin Biscuits, Spaghetti Squash Fritters, and Tomato Pie with herbed mascarpone—5th & Taylor will have you starting your night off right.

Then move into main courses. There’s Monkfish, Tilefish, and Scallops. There’s Beer Can Chicken, Beef Cheek Pot Roast, and a BBQ Meatloaf Sandwich. If you’d rather go the wood-grilled route, you can get the ribeye or filet. Or, if you just can’t decide, I suggest ordering the Mixed Grill. It comes with beef filet, lamb breast, and venison sausage with mashed potatoes and oxtail gravy.

This is what I believe they have at the moment but their menu is always changing but they do like to keep their staples. For example they tend to always have their delicious mash potatoes, fun fact they give you unlimited amount of mash when you order a steak! Main reason why my girlfriend always gets the filet. My favorite is their fried chicken, they smoke it first and then fry it. It is incredible!

Even the sides fit the flavor theme here. Jalapeno Cornbread with sorghum butter, Parsnip Creamed Spinach, and Mac & Cheese.

But leave a spot for dessert—it isn’t a truly southern meal without one. There’s the Fried Apple Pie with miso caramel and vanilla bourbon ice cream or the Grasshopper Pie with creme de menthe and white chocolate whipped cream. But it’s hard for me to see the next option on a menu and not give it a try: Banana Pudding. Chef Lindley’s take has meringue, banana tuile, and candied pecans. If you’ve never had banana pudding, or if you’re a major fan—either way, you need to try this one.

I know you’ve got tons of food options in Nashville. It’s one of my favorite parts of Music City. But if you’re making a list of spots to hit while you’re in town (or working your way through with Nash’s Guide to Nashville), make sure you treat yourself to the 5th & Taylor experience.

That is all we've got for today folks, be sure to stay tuned so you can get your share of the sweet tea tomorrow and the rest of the week.
